About balance transfer credit cards

Getting a credit card balance transfer with a 0 percent interest rate for a year or longer can be a great way to save money if you’re paying off an existing balance at a high APR. That said, balances transfers can also be a slippery slope — if you find yourself moving the same balance from one card to another for several years, you probably need to take a closer look at why you’re in debt.

To choose a balance transfer credit card, you want to look at how long they offer the 0% rate, what the balance transfer fee is (most cards charge between 4 and 5 percent of the money you transfer) and your chances of being approved for the card. If you have a lot of credit card debt on other cards, you may have a hard time getting approved for some cards that offer the best balance transfer rates. Look for cards with an average approved score close to your current credit score.

Once you get your new balance transfer credit card, do not use it for new purchases! Instead focus on paying down your debt before the introductory rate expires.
