The minute you start getting 1090s' or run a small business on the side - you must hire someone else to wade through the 80,000 pages of the tax code. I usually get most of my tax clients for one of the reasons you listed; starting a small business as a freelancer or consultant is a popular reason to hire a CPA. Last tax season I had a lady hire me because she started tutoring high school students. She had always done her own tax return. She said, 'Teach me what to do so I can do it myself next year." OK, fine by me and I start explaining the Sch C. By the end of our appointment she started saying how she would be back next year! Ha, ha! Good advice Carrie. I've had a surprising bout of luck with this option, they are quick to understand questions and knowledgeable about the answers.
