Introducing a Simpler MoneyUnder30.com
Yikes! Things do indeed look different around here! I’m making some aesthetic changes to MoneyUnder30.com for some good reasons. Call it a redesign or call it Spring cleaning, my ultimate goal is to create a better experience for you.
The new design you are seeing is the free WordPress theme Misty-Look by Sadish Bala. I saw it on one of my favorite non-financial blogs, StrongLifts.com. I liked it so much I decided to implement it here.
But I didn’t just change the theme because I was bored…

I changed the theme of Money Under 30 to simplify the site and put the focus solely on the content. As I continue to build upon the tremendous success I’ve enjoyed recently, I want to stop worrying about how custom design tweaks. I admit this new theme isn’t going to win any cutting edge design awards, but it does what a good theme should—it allows visitors to easily read my content and (hopefully) navigate around the site.
Two improvements I especially hope you’ll enjoy are:
- A site search feature that is easily accessible on the top navigation bar.
- Ads that now appear to the right of the main content instead of on the left, hopefully providing an easier reading experience.
This new design is the first improvement of several to come as I work to streamline and “professionalize” Money Under 30. Stay tuned for more. And, as always, please send me any questions, suggestions, or complaints!

Personally, I don’t like this change at all. Misty Look is one of the most overused themes on the entire internet. Instead of looking unique and clean, it just makes this site completely forgettable. You’re way better than this.
I miss the old format already
Hmm, OK…so early reviews are not so good. If that continues to be the consensus I may go with something more original again; although my last theme got far too home-grown (and I’m not a designer), that things were starting to get funky, which wasn’t good for long-term growth. I appreciate the honesty and welcome further comments…though for the time being I’ll get back to writing about money!
I like the search bar being at the top of the page but I have to agree with Steve that the Misty Look template is way overused and pretty much a generic standard in the Wordpress world. But hey, as long as you keep pumping out interesting content, I’ll come back! Cheers!
Actually, I like the theme change.
There’s no reason you can’t make this an ongoing project. Over time, work on it and make it more unique, but this is a good foundation. I’d like to see some more graphics but I think it’s WAY more readable. The old site did seem a bit messy to me.
Perhaps a good start would be to change the colors a bit. That would break away from the “over-used” theme without actually being any real… work
It would be cool to get some good financial widgets on here too!
Also, and this comes from extensive experience managing websites…
Your content makes your site, not the design, unless your site is about graphics design. People will remember your site for the good articles, not some fancy layout. Too much emphasis on the web is placed on how sites look, while next to none is on the content.
GetRichSlowly doesn’t have a memorable layout. At all. Yet, it is a VERY succesful blog. So I challenge the arguement that you need to focus on making it super fancy. More importance should be placed on readers being able to find the material to read as easily as possible. I totally feel this new layout contributes to that effort better.
Remember, people with extraordinarily strong opinions are usually the ones to speak out in feedback forums like this… your average reader (which makes up the majority) may have a completely different view than the small minority that voices its opinion.
A poll could be a good idea to gather a larger sample of feedback?
I feel that you could benefit greatly by incorporating graphics and other multimedia that go along with your articles. Even so, I will continue reading your blog, excellent content with valuable information.
Meh, feels generic and squished now (the body portion).
