Recommended Tax Software: TurboTax

TurboTax - Federal FREE EditionOver the years I’ve done my taxes myself, hired a CPA and used several different software packages. TurboTax isn’t always the cheapest tax prep software available, but in my opinion it’s the best.

For your federal return, TurboTax is hard to beat because you can prepare and file a basic federal tax return for free. Paid versions are required if you have advanced schedules or to file a state return.

If you haven’t tried TurboTax, I recommend it. Start your return now for free …

WHAT’S INCLUDED

TurboTax Federal Free Edition includes everything you need to prepare and file a basic federal tax return. TurboTax will walk you through all the questions on the 1040EZ, 1040, or 1040A that you need to answer to get the biggest refund you qualify for.

Basic federal filing is free; state returns cost $36.99 each. Or, depending on your state, you may be able to easily transfer the information from your federal return to a paper state return and avoid incurring the state filing fee.

Some of the benefits from using TurboTax that I’ve found include:

  • The ability to save progress and return any time of day.
  • Finding credits and deductions I might miss.
  • Simple language that makes complex tax questions easier to understand.
  • Checks my return for red flags that might trigger an audit.
