Fuel costs have been fluctuating recently---if you're looking to save money at the pump, check out our picks for the best gas rewards credit cards.

At some point we’ve all complained about the price of gas. And I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard my grandparents and even my parents talk about how upset they were when the price of gas went up over a dollar—how times have changed.

While I don’t have the answer for getting older generations to stop boring you with stories about how much cheaper things used to be, I can share a simple way to save at the gas pump: Consider a cash rewards credit card that offers cash back at gas stations.

Shell Drive for Five® card

With the Shell Drive for Five® card, you’ll get 25 cents off every gallon of Shell fuel for the first two months of your account opening! After that, you’ll get a still respectable five cents off. Blue Cash Everyday® from Amex

This card offers three percent cash back at supermarkets (up to $6,000 per year in purchases, then one percent). It also offers two percent cash back at gas stations and select department stores, and one percent on other purchases.

At the time of writing, the Blue Cash Everyday® card is offering $200 back after spending $1,000 in the first three months.

Citi ThankYou® Premier card

The Citi ThankYou® card is not only great for fuel savings, but it’s a decent travel rewards card as well. It gives you 3x at gas stations and other travel expenses. These include, but are not limited to: airfare, hotels, cruises, car rentals, and travel agencies.

You’ll also get 2x on dining out and entertainment, which includes live entertainment such as concerts, sports, zoos, and amusement parks. You also recieve 1x on all other purchases.

The only drawback with the Citi ThankYou® card, is that it has a $95 annual fee. However, the fee is waived for the first 12 months.

Chase Ink Business CashSM credit card

The Chase Ink Business CashSM card is designed for, as the title suggests, business owners. It offers five percent cash back on the first $25,000 in combined purchases at office supply stores and your internet, cable, and phone bills each year.

You’ll also get two percent cash back on the first $25,000 spent in combined purchases from gas stations and restaurants each account anniversary year. You’ll receive one percent cash back on all other purchases.

Currently, there’s a $300 bonus cash back offer after you spend $3,000 in the first three months of opening an account.

You can add employee card to your account at no additional cost. This card also has no annual fee.

So, which do we recommend?

That, of course, depends on what exactly you’re looking for.

In my personal experience, a great credit card just for gas is the Sunoco Rewards credit card. But I also get points from my grocery store—so that is what truly makes it worth it. Five cents off may not seem like much, but paired with the substantial grocery points, you’re looking a great savings. And I only shop for myself and my partner, larger families earn even more points because they have to buy more anyway.

For people who drive a lot and want to maximize their savings at the pump, this is my favorite gas rewards credit card.

If you can’t sign up for extra rewards at grocery stores, the second best card just for gas is definitely the ExxonMobil™ Smart card, which offers six cents off rather than five (again, that adds up).

This is a straightforward gas rewards card. Exxon and Mobil stations are everywhere, so you should have no problem finding a station. Plus, all smartphones allow you to search for certain gas station near you if you ever can’t find one.

Alternatives to gas credit cards

If you didn’t find the perfect card for you, we recommend checking out some other cards on the market. They might offer slightly lower rewards on gas, but they make up for it with other perks, like travel rewards, cash back in other categories, and even some really cool and unique benefits.

Finding the right credit card is much simpler if you know your credit score and can narrow your search to only the cards you know you’ll get approved for. We’ve made it easy for you. If you don’t already know your score, use our quick and free Credit Score Estimator tool – then find the perfect card for you!

Summary

The price of gas has a history of fluctuation. A cash back card that offers rewards with gas stations in mind can help you get some money back, even when fuel costs are high.
