Why the Credit One Bank® Visa® for Rebuilding Credit is good for building credit

You can qualify for the Credit One Bank® Visa® for Rebuilding Credit even with poor credit. You can use the card just as you would any other credit card, and your payment history will be reported to the major credit bureaus, giving you a chance to increase your credit score.

How to use the Credit One Bank® Visa® for Rebuilding Credit

While the card does provide 1% cash back on common purchases like gas, groceries, and communication services, the main purpose is to help you to build or rebuild your credit. Use the card the way you would any other, but be absolutely fanatical about making your monthly payments on time. Those payments will be reported to the credit bureaus and improve your credit score.

The card will also give you access to both your credit score and credit report summary from Experian. And though your credit limit may start low, Credit One will perform periodic reviews to consider increasing your limit.

Why you might not want to consider the Credit One Bank® Visa® for Rebuilding Credit

The annual fee can have a big impact, especially on a low credit limit. You may prefer a card with no annual fee, like the Credit One Bank® Platinum Rewards Visa with No Annual Fee Credit Card.

Credit One Bank® NASCAR® Credit Card

*This card is no longer available.

Why the Credit One Bank® NASCAR® Credit Card is good for NASCAR fans with fair credit

Credit One Bank® NASCAR® Credit Card starts by offering 1% cash back on eligible gas and automotive purchases. Credit One will also double your rewards on purchases made at the NASCAR Shop. It’s an excellent choice if you are a NASCAR fan, you have fair credit, and you want a rewards credit card specifically designed for your favorite sport.

How to use the Credit One Bank® NASCAR® Credit Card

You can use this card just the way you would any other credit card, earning cash back rewards on all purchases. But the biggest advantage will come from making purchases at the NASCAR Shop, where you’ll earn 2% cash back. And of course, the most important thing is to make your payments on time each and every month. That will both increase your credit scores and possibly increase your credit limit over time, too.

Why you might not want to consider the Credit One Bank® NASCAR® Credit Card

If you have impaired credit, but you’re not a NASCAR fan, you’ll want to consider one of the other Credit One cards available on this list. They offer similar benefits, but you won’t get double rewards on NASCAR purchases.

Why the Credit One Bank® Platinum Visa® is good for cash back on groceries, gas, and communication services

The Credit One Bank® Platinum Visa® also provides 1% cash back, but they’re concentrated on gas, groceries, and communication services, like mobile phone service, Internet, and cable and satellite TV. It’ll be an opportunity to improve your credit while getting a bit of a discount on your communication services.

How to use the Credit One Bank® Platinum Visa®

You certainly want to use the card to improve your credit score by making your monthly payments on time on a regular basis. But along the way, you should use the card to pay for any communications expenses you have.

Why you might not want to consider the Credit One Bank® Platinum Visa®

First, you may not qualify for this card if you have poor credit. It’s designed for those with fair credit or better. Second, you may also prefer a credit card that offers less restricted cash back, such as 1% cash back on all purchases.

You’ll need to have fair or better credit with the Credit One Bank® Rewards Visa with No Annual Fee Credit Card. But if you do, you’ll get enhanced rewards. First, you’ll get 2% cash back on purchases in select categories. Those include gas stations, grocery stores, and communication services. Then you’ll also get up to 10% cash back on purchases at select merchants. And it all comes with no annual fee.

How to use the Credit One Bank® Rewards Visa with No Annual Fee Credit Card

The Credit One Bank® Rewards Visa with No Annual Fee Credit Card is an excellent way to get rewards on groceries, gas, and communication services, which are common purchases virtually all consumers make. But you also want to take advantage of purchases at any participating merchants providing 10% cash back.

Why you might not want to consider the Credit One Bank® Rewards Visa with No Annual Fee Credit Card

This is another Credit One card that requires at least fair credit. If you have poor credit, you probably won’t be eligible. But you may also prefer a general rewards card that offers cash back on all purchases, rather than one limited just to gas, groceries, and communication services.

Credit One Bank® Platinum X5 Visa® Credit Card

Card features

  • Annual fee: $95.
  • APR range: 25.49% Variable.
  • 0% introductory APR: N/A.
  • Sign-up bonus: N/A.
  • Rewards: 5% cash back on the first $5,000 for gas, groceries, and communication services; unlimited 1% cash back on all other purchases.
  • Other features: Access your Experian credit score and credit report summary.

Why the Credit One Bank® Platinum X5 Visa Credit Card is good for overall cash back rewards

Keeping in mind that the Credit One Bank® Platinum X5 Visa Credit Card is designed for those with fair or better credit, it offers a surprisingly generous cash back package. You can earn an incredible 5% cash back on purchases of gas, groceries, and communication services for a combined total of up to $5,000 per year. That’s $250 each year if you make the maximum amount of purchases.

But after that, you’ll earn unlimited 1% cash back on all other purchases. And you can be doing all of this while you are gradually working to improve your credit score.

How to use the Credit One Bank® Platinum X5 Visa Credit Card

With virtually every other card on this list, I emphasize the central importance of using the card to improve your credit scores by making your payments on time each and every month. That’s important with the Credit One Bank® Platinum X5 Visa Credit Card too, but this is also a card that offers you a real opportunity to take advantage of cash back rewards.

You’ll certainly want to use the card to make the full $5,000 in annual purchases on gas, groceries, and communication services. The 5% cash back you earn in those spending categories is comparable with some of the best credit cards available for those with good or excellent credit.

Why you might not want to consider the Credit One Bank® Platinum X5 Visa Credit Card

Probably the only drawback we could think of with this card is the annual fee. It’s at the higher end of the range for Credit One credit cards. But if you can max out those 5% spending categories, the annual fee will be well worth paying anyway.

Americans with bad credit are faced with a dilemma. They need to be approved for a new line of credit in order to start improving their credit score, but most lenders won’t give them a chance.

Those that will approve them for a new account are the sub-prime lenders, and their credit cards will offer less competitive rates and fees than others.

If you’ve been looking for a credit card for people with credit problems, then you’ve probably come across Credit One Bank credit cards.

Let’s take a look at how Credit One works, and see if their cards are worth considering.

Who is Credit One?

The first thing you have to know about Credit One is who they are not. Credit One is not Capital One. They are entirely unrelated companies that both happen to issue credit cards. This is even more confusing because their logos are similar.

Next, you should know that Credit One focuses on subprime cards for those who’ve had problems with their credit.

Finally, Credit One Bank is based in Las Vegas and boasts over 7 million cardholders.

Should you consider Credit One?

This is a tough call. Credit One’s products don’t offer very competitive terms, and the possibility of having a credit card with no grace period is troubling. In addition, these cards can have very high annual fees.

On the other hand, Credit One’s cards aren’t meant for those who can qualify for most other credit cards. They are made for people with serious credit problems. The other kind of card that meets this need is called a secured card.

Summary

If you want to rebuild your credit at the lowest possible cost, then a secured card is the product for you. But if you have poor credit, and you simply want to avoid paying a security deposit, then Credit One can be an option to consider.

But with secured cards available that require as little as $49 as a refundable deposit, which is likely less than Credit One’s non-refundable annual fee of up to $75, most would be better off applying for a secured card rather than an unsecured card from Credit One. By understanding exactly what Credit One offers, you can make the best choice for your needs.
